Aldeburgh beach in SuffolkAldeburgh is a seaside town in Suffolk on the East coast of England that enjoys the finest pebble beach in the universe. If you are in any doubt, see a production of Benjamin Britten's opera Peter Grimes, the tale of a man who is innocent of the murder of his apprentice but is chased around town by a mob of angry fishermen. Peter Grimes lived in a fisherman's cottage, and you can enjoy one too for your next holiday. Aldeburgh's beach plays a vital part, with sailing boats that have been winched ashore creating marvellous architectural objects that rise from the mounds of pebbles. Brought into the modern day these seaside scenes form a beautiful landscape that make for the most perfect of cottage holidays.

As you walk along the beach from the next door town of Thorpeness, watching the waves crash over the beach you start to experience the peace that the sea provides. There is an unexpected calm solitude that the visceral blast of the sea brings, and after only a couple of hours the stress of a busy working life fades away and your holiday begins in earnest.

You walk into the centre of Aldeburgh, the main road lined with excellent restaurants, cafes, bars, tearooms and gift shops, to buy the provisions for your self catering holiday from the mini supermarket. And then if you have the time, stop at the best fish and chip shop in the world. It's not so much the fish and chips, it's the chance to spend a few treasured moments with the members of your family, surrounded by seagulls, watching the sea, sitting on the sea wall, throwing pebbles and digging into your chips and tomato ketchup, discussing the ways you are going to spend the days of your holiday. Remember the Aldeburgh Festival at Snape Maltings with its awesome concert hall.

Cottages in Aldeburgh come in all shapes and sizes, some of them small, with just one or two bedrooms, looking out onto the beach, some of them big cottages that can sleep parties of five, six, seven or eight people. Many people struggle to decide which Suffolk seaside town to stay at, because it's obviously going to be a toss up between Aldeburgh with its wealth of holiday cottages, Dunwich, Southwold, Walberswick, Westleton, Theberton, Minsmere, Orford, Shingle Street and Bawdsey.

Or should you stay inland, in Woodbridge, Saxmundham, Framlingham (with its historic castle), Lowestoft, Halesworth or Ipswich.

When you are booking your holiday cottage online make sure that it has all the facilities you need. Look out for single and double bedrooms, a living room with a fireplace, kitchen, dining room, conservatory, toilet, shower and bathroom. A garden is really nice, too, with a barbeque. Central heating, a nearby pub, washing machine, dishwasher, fridge, freezer, tumble drier, microwave oven, pets, TV and offroad parking are also important considerations.

Cottage holidays are a great way to be quietly alone, with all the facilities of home, the comfort of a hotel or bed and breakfast, and the simplicity of country living. The journey up the A12 is relaxing, and the fun is just waiting round the corner for you.
