The Lake District is a spectacular holiday cottage destination, with sweeping majestic views, buckets of tourist attractions, and the chance for you to take the holiday you deserve, close to home.

Located in the North West of England, the Lake District National Park is the biggest English National Park and within this marvellous space you will find fells, dales, lakes, villages, towns and beaches (yes it's true, there are beaches next to the lakes!).

Lake District holiday cottages

With thousands of miles of rights of way your cottage holiday can include bundles of exercise. Remember to take a pedometer for walking around the fells, or put your bike on a bike rack on your car and cycle around the countryside.

If you want to engage in water sports on your self catering cottage holiday there is plenty of canoeing, sailing on the lakes, or fishing. You can hire boats, kayaks and dinghies at boating centres, and relive Swallows and Amazons, take a picnic in a rustic picnic basket and row to a grassy bank next to the gentle lapping waves, or hire a bigger electric self drive boat on Coniston Water, or even travel on a steam yacht gondola to go to John Ruskin's cottage, Brantwood.

Windermere and Ambleside are favourite locations for holiday cottages because they are traditional English holiday locations. The tourist information centres have plenty of free leaflets on local accommodation, local attractions, walking holidays, cycling tours of the Lake District , and you can go shopping in the local shops to buy gifts for your family.

Returning to your comfy holiday cottage in the evening

In the evening when you have returned to your cottage to freshen up you can stroll out in the evening to Keswick Theatre or a local pub for traditional ale and steak and kidney pudding dinner, or drive in to Bowness and watch the sun go down over the gorgeous view.

In the grassy back garden in your rented holiday cottage your kids can play around in safety, or you might want to spend a few days in a tent on a camping site, or in a caravan holiday.

If you go out for a cycle for the day, leaving your holiday cottage in the morning, you don't have to rush home because you can plan to stop off at a camping barn. A camping barn is a stone barn giving you simple overnight shelter if you are on a walking or cycling holiday. They are roomy and dry so you don't need a tent, and have a wooden sleeping platform a solid table, a slate cooking bench, cold water tap and WC. A bucket and bowl, clothes hooks and waste bags are also provided. Camping barns are close to amazing walking country and there are 14 camping barns in the Lake District . An overnight stay costs only £5 per person with a maximum capacity 18 persons.

Holiday cottage rest - Lake District excitement

Don't forget your climbing equipment because the Lake District is thought to be the birthplace of modern rock climbing. The Cumbrian fells crags are an ideal place for climbing, with a range of easy access roadside crags in Borrowdale and more remote cliffs on the higher peaks of Scafell and Pillar

With fantastic mountains, walks, hiking and scrambles, the Lake Distrct has many pathways and rambles on the lake shores, passing waterfalls and tarns, streams and lakes. Walking routes can take you to Scafell Pike windswept peak, the Helvellyn Striding Edge paths and the pubs and inns along the way where you can rest your aching feet, taking off your long socks and walking boots.
