Cottages updated today
Cornwall has something for everyone, we were told. So we packed up the car with luggage and kids and didn't uncross our fingers until we arrived at our destination. This was a beautifully-landscaped holiday cottage on the south coast mid-way between the olde worlde port of Polperro and the quaint-beyond-belief fishing port of Looe. Those are the bits for us grown-ups. The cottage itself offered everything our 7 year old, Oliver, and our 5 year old, Amelia, could possibly want.
And they wanted it all! Our rental holiday home was only a short walk down a footpath from the local beach. This, and the holiday cottages fabulous grassy back garden was where the kids spent most of their time. When they weren't exploring rock pools and collecting all kinds of hopping, flapping and pinching marine life, they were screaming in the heated swimming pool in the back garden and stuffing themselves with pizza.
But there had to be something on our cottage holiday for the adults. This meant a day in Polperro and Looe - wandering around the tight lanes, browsing in the many local tourist shops and enjoying the fruit de mare at local pubs and restaurants.
The thing about our Cornish holiday cottage that was most pleasing was the welcome we received from the people of cornwall everywhere we went. Cornwall's holiday cottages are renowned for their comfort and facilities, and we were not at all disappointed.
It was difficult to agree the highlight of our self catering holiday. The National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth or the famous Eden Project. The first offered brilliantly-coloured fish and razor-toothed sharks in huge underground tanks. The children were thoroughly impressed by the huge, graceful manta ray.
Points of reference for your tour of the South coast of Cornwall:
South Cornwall is a peaceful and picturesque holiday cottage destination that enjoys a rugged and romantic coast and family friendly beaches. An unspoilt corner of England, some of the lush farm land and woodland near to the sea is accessible by narrow country lanes that linger in your memory for years after you walk down them enjoying your holiday. The beaches and fishing villages lead you to secret coves, dramatic cliffs and you can climb down to the beach on foot, carrying your sandwiches and towels, enjoying the best days that Cornwall has to offer.
The Eden Project, with its biomes housing exotic plants from around the world, also got the thumbs up. Even though it meant an early start and an hour's drive, they couldn't resist running through the forests and plants to discover different places of the world. They thought the plants that made chewing gum and the plants that moved were really cool. There was plenty of opportunity to eat and stock up with drink on the way around and the day soon passed and found tired children asleep on the back seat for the return trip.
When it came to beautiful beaches, lovely walks through villages - and keeping both kids and adults happy - this part of Cornwall certainly lived up to its reputation as England's holiday cottages mecca.
